iWatch

According to reports from the New York Times, Apple is working on a project of intelligent clock. iwatch with iOS, Siri voice assistant, 1.5-inch display, can connect to other devices through Bluetooth. It also measures the pressure, the beats etc… The watch will be fully transparent and will be made with a revolutionary flexible Willow Glass. iWatch can only recognize its owner by sensors, making it unusable in case of theft. Last but not least: the watch also shows what’s the time.

Burj Khalifa. So unpleasant, so beautiful.

The Burj Khalifa in Dubai is a beautiful architecture but it has two big problems: it is the tallest in the world and it is built in the UAE. These two features, through the eyes of the snob glossy magazine critics always ready to rattle off negative numbers in relation to ecological problems, maintenance costs, etc. have made it ugly, unpleasant, rude and arrogant. If the Khalifa had been built in London, Paris or New York and paid by any Foundation, things would have probably turned out differently, we would have hailed as a masterpiece both from an engineering and urban and linguistic standpoint. Instead it was built in Dubai by sheiks that are well known to go around in diamonds-studded Rolls and in 660 ft-long yachts and therefore anything they do has to be meant as vulgar. When I arrived in Dubai last week, I was very biased towards what I would have seen a little later. I was expecting a monster building. I had seen photos, projects and even some videos but it is useless: as the great natural spectacles, also architectures must be seen in person. And so, when I stood in front of the Khalifa, I cannot deny that I was excited. It is 2,722 ft high. As a matter of fact it is twice the Empire State Building and almost three times the Eiffel Tower. The architecture, which was not carried out by a provincial study, but one of the most important studies in the world, Skidmore Owings and Merrill (www.som.com) made an excellent job. The Y-shaped plan was inspired by a flower, the Hymenocallis, typical of the area. At its base the adjacent buildings, lakes and paths do not make it a pretentious building at all. On the contrary, walking around it you do not realize to be at the bottom of a half-mile tall tower. Then looking at the building that rises to the sky with its shapes, decreasing gradually and turning into terraces, make it well proportioned and light. It is a large rocket that ends in a 230 ft spire with a diameter of only 4,9 ft. Needless to mention records: it overreached them all. The elevators run at a speed of 10 m/s, it has 168 floors, and for its construction it has been used an abnormal amount of steel and concrete (otherwise it would not be the highest in the world). Every day hundreds of thousands of tourists gather around the Khalifa watching the fountains show and sitting at restaurants by the artificial lake. And thanks to government commitment this city hosts annually more than one hundred million visitors (Dubai has only 2 million residents). The skyscraper (Burj in Arabic) was supposed to be called Burj Dubai but, as during construction the financial crisis had overtaken, Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zahied to Nahayan came forth and paid off the debts with a few billion dollars. Dedicate the skyscraper to him was the least thing to do. Also in this case it was cried foul. It is not clear why. If it had been supported by Morgan Stanley or by Barclay's, would it be more elegant? Apart from this, Dubai is a city worth visiting. One day, two at most. That's all it can offer. But success and commitment are tangible. In 2020 Dubai hosts the Expo (after Milan ...) and we'll see what happens. It remains to understand something. Arabs are doing anything to invest the proceeds derived from their underground assets (oil) in the best possible way, sometimes acting wrong, but results are there for everyone to see. We Italians, with our black gold in surface (Italy owns more than 70 per cent of the world’s recognized artistic heritage), live in a country on the verge of collapse and we have no direction but to criticize others. In that we are certainly the best. PF

One year after its debut on the market we are pleased to report that the collections of notebooks Ogami which we have treated the creative direction is distributed throughout the world. Besides the most important design stores and libraries, Ogami Notebooks are present in major museums such as the Venice Biennale, Macro in Rome, MoMA in New York, Whitney Museum, and many others. Are proving particularly successful in the Japanese market where they are born corner specially dedicated to this collection. The Ogami notebooks are made with a special paper from the stone called "Repap" and are completely tree free.

Ristrutturazione di ex scuderia a San Siro, Milano

Ecco alcuni scatti di una recente ristrutturazione di una residenza a Milano dove sono stati curati il progetto e la realizzazione.

Nuovo negozio Piacenza cashmere a Milano

E' stato inaugurato il nuovo store Piacenza Cachmere che abbiamo progettato e realizzato insieme all'amico Carlo Taglioretti.

Il negozio, su due piani, si trova al numero 25 di via Manzoni a Milano a fianco del Grand Hotel Et de Milan, in fondo a via Montenapoleone.

NUOVO CONCEPT STORE PIACENZA CASHMERE

Abbiamo recentemente firmato insieme all'amico e collega Carlo Taglioretti l'incarico per la progettazione e la realizzazione del nuovo negozio Piacenza Cachmere, storica azienda biellese fondata nel 1733.

Il negozio, su due piani, si trova al numero 25 di via Manzoni a Milano a fianco del Grand Hotel Et de Milan, in fondo a via Montenapoleone.

L'inaugurazione è prevista per il 30 settembre 2010

ARMILLE, LA NUOVA LAMPADA DISEGNATA PER MARTINELLI LUCE

In araldica gli Armille erano gli anelli concentrici posti uno dentro l'altro in numero di due o di tre. Si chiamavano Armille anche i bracciali che venivano dati ai soldati più valorosi dell'esercito romano. Ora Armille diventa anche il nome della lampada che insieme a Studiovo abbiamo disegnato per Martinelli Luce

Una lampada a sospensione di 130 cm. di diametro realizzata completamente in alluminio con il diffusore inferiore concavo realizzato in metalcrilato satinato. La lampada ha una illuminazione sia diretta che riflessa grazie a sei lampade fluorescenti 36w 2G11.

Sarà disponibile in due varianti di colore bianco e nero e sarà realizzata anche in versione plafoniera.

Armille verrà presentata al pubblico in occasione del prossimo Salone del Mobile di Milano dal 12 al 17 aprile 2011.

la borsa di Abitare

Era il 1996 e avevamo realizzato per la la rivista Abitare il design di una borsa da lavoro pensata soprattutto per designer o architetti.

Una cartella di grande formato che potesse contenere documenti fino al formato A/3 e che mantenesse una certa eleganza e coerenza formale. Quella borsa fu un successo perchè al prezzo non proprio concorrenziale di 800 mila lire, e per corrispondenza, ne furono vendute diverse migliaia in tutto il mondo e non solo a professionisti del settore.

Ancora oggi, dopo quasi 15 anni, e ormai fuori produzione, pare che non conosca età visto che sembra realizzata apposta per contenere il nuovo I Pad di Apple!

Una casa di ottanta metri quadri in centro a Milano

Lavorare a progetti di piccole dimensioni è un esercizio sempre molto stimolante. Ecco il risultato di un lavoro di interior design dove la parete del soggiorno è stata completamente rivestita con un contenitore/libreria e il disegno dei pieni e dei vuoti rendono dinamico lo spazio e la prospettiva dall'ingresso.

MondoArc Magazine pubblica sul numero di Aprile il progetto per il Golf Club degli Ulivi a Sanremo

La rivista di architettura inglese MondoArc Magazine specializzata in architettura e Light design (www.mondoarc.com) ha recentemente pubblicato un servizio relativo al ristorante del Golf Club Sanremo dove il nostro studio ha curato sia il progetto che la ristrutturazione.

Il restyling della sala di oltre 230 metri quadrati ha interessato sia il restauro e la conservazione della sala ottocentesca che il disegno e la realizzazione degli arredi. Particolari apprezzamenti sono stati rivolti alla scelta dei corpi illuminanti con la lampada Atomium prodotta da Kundalini ( www.kundalini. it )

Yes we've moved!

Sono finalmente terminati i lavori del nuovo studio. Ci siamo trasferiti, sempre a Milano, ma in pieno centro, in via Vivaio al numero 6.

Gli uffici, di circa 200 metri quadrati, si trovano al primo piano di uno splendido palazzo d'epoca. A breve verranno pubblicate sul sito www.frello.com alcune foto degli spazi.
